Indian held in connection with UK bomb plot
Canberra, July 3: A man detained in Australia in connection with the suspected al Qaeda plot to detonate car bombs in London and Scotland is an Indian national, Prime Minister John Howard told a news conference today.
''The first person taken into custody is an Indian national who came to Australia sponsored by the Queensland Health Department under a 457 visa,'' Howard said.
''He has not been arrested. No charges have been laid. He is being questioned by the police in the normal way.'' Queensland state Premier Peter Beattie said earlier that the 27-year-old hospital registrar had been seized by counter-terrorism police at Brisbane airport late yesterday as he was trying to leave the country.
