UPA turning India into a US military ally: CPM

New Delhi, July 2: Reacting to the port call by the USS Nimitz off Chennai, the CPI(M) today apprehended that the UPA government was implementing the defence framework agreement with the United States which will 'convert India into a US military ally.' The Party Polit Bureau, in a statement here, said the Defence Minister and the US Embassy had misled the people by saying that there were no nuclear weapons on board the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

''These are statements which misinform the Indian people,'' the statement said.

It pointed out that Rear Admiral John Terence Blake, Commander of the Carrier Strike Group told the media on June 30 on board the Nimitz, ''We can neither confirm nor deny the presence of weapons on board the ship,'' in keeping with the US Navy guidelines.

The world's largest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier docked about two to three nautical miles off the Chennai Port this morning.

Officials in the US Consulate here told sources that the ship was anchored about two to three nautical miles from the port.
