SUCI workers arrested during demonstration

Kolkata, Jul 2: Police lathicharged and arrested 29 Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) activists during a snap demonstration outside the West Bengal Assembly on the opening day today, in protest against the murder of Tapasi Malik.

Women activists of the party, forming the major chunk of about 50-odd SUCI demonstrators, went into scuffles and fisticuffs as police used batons to control the situation when the second leg of the budget session of the House was about to begin.

"We had to arrest 29 SUCI supporters who were demonstrating by squatting on the road in front of the Assembly's north gate," Deputy Commissioner of Police Pradip Chatterjee said.

The SUCI alleged that four of its workers had been seriously injured in an 'unprovoked' lathicharge by police, which however, Mr.Chatterjee denied.

Holding posters, the demonstrators were shouting slogans demanding an 'impartial probe' and punishment of the guilty for the murder of Tapasi, whose charred body was found inside the project site of Tata Motors' small car factory at Singur on December 18 last year.

Probing the case, the CBI has so far arrested two persons, including the Singur zonal committee Secretary of the CPI(M) in connection with the murder.
