Udupi, July 2 (UNI) The Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samiti(NVHS) which is waging a war against the proposed coal based thermal power project near Nandikur in Udupi district by Nagarjuna Power Company Limited (NPCL) today strongly opposed the release of fly ash emitted from the proposed project to the sea.

Talking to newspersons here, the President of the Executive Committee of Samiti, Vijay Kumar Hegde said the Samiti would condemn the wrong statement given to the court by the company that the proposed land for the project was an inhabitant area.

Mr Hegde alleged that the company had given a false impression to the court that no rivers were flowing nearby the proposed land and no cultivable land in the 50 kms radius from the proposed site. It had also wrongly stated that the acquired land for the project was not useful for any habitation, as it was totally rocky hillock, he added.

He alleged that the company had also given a false statement before the court that there was no thick habitation near the sea and the fishermen were not willing to continue with the fishing activities. Hence the fly ash emitted by the project could be released to the sea, he added.

He said the Samiti would provide relevant documents to the court, disproving the false statement submitted by the company and district administration. According to the Central Government notification no industry was supposed to have ash ponds in their plant from 2008, he added.

Mr Hegde said following the government notification, the company had planned to release the fly ash emitted by the plant directly to the sea which was yet to be commissioned.
