Huge inflow into Krishna, 2.12 lakh cusecs released from Alamatti

Banglaore, July 2 (UNI) The swolen Krishna river which is in spate following heavy discharge from rain battered Maharshtra, caused concerns in North Karnataka districts of Belgaum, Bijapur and Bagalkot districts even as 2.12 lakh cusecs of water was let out from Alamatti dam.

Officials warned of flood havoc as the inflow into the Krishna was likely to go up to three lakh cusecs with levels reaching danger mark.

The inflow into Krishna rose sharply to 2.8 lakh cusecs this evening in Belgaum. In the neigobouring Bijapur authorities evacuated many families and kept ready 16 boats to face the situation. Similar steps had been taken in Gulbarga and Bagalkot districts as well.

Heavy rains continued in Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts, while it came down further in the northern districts, which now faced flood threats.

Mudigere in Chikmagalur district received 22 cms of rain yesterday, followed by Bhagamandala in Kodagu with 16. Very Heavy rains were reported from Agumbe, Hosanagar, Linganamakki and Thirthahalli.

"The situation is still manageable and there are no villages that have been marooned. Though about 20 villages have been water logged, the situation is under control," a top official said in Belgaum.

In Gulbarga, Bhima posed the danger with more than 20,000 cusecs released from Ujjain dam in neighbouring Maharashtra.

A Bagalkot report said all the 26 crust gates of Alamatti were opened and 2.12 lakh cusecs was let out to downstream Narayanpur dam in Gulbarga district.

Cauvery started getting substantial inflows following heavy rains in Kodagu while inflows were seen upward trends in Hemavathi, Lakshmanathirtha and Kabini in the basin.
