Hearing in BMW sting operation case deferred

New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today deferred till July 4 the hearing of the BMW sting operation case after one of the judges recused himself from the case claiming he had heard the case in trial court.

Justice P K Bhasin recused himself from hearing the case as the proceedings in the trial court were before him when he was an additional sessions judge.

The case will come up for hearing before the Chief Justice M K Sharma, who had taken suo motu cognisance of the sting operation that was aired on a television channel where the defence as well as the prosecution counsel were shown influencing the witness.

A television channel had in a sting operation shown defence lawyer R K Anand talking to the witness of the case about some monetary benifits for the deposition before the court in favour of his client Sanjive Nanda, an accused in the BMW hit-and-run case.

In the same operation, prosecution lawyer I U Khan was also shown conversing to the witness.

Taking a serious note of the situation, the Chief justice had ordered seizure of all original unedited footage of the sting operation and asked Registrar General of the Delhi High Court Ajeet Bhariok to watch the CDs and file a report in the court.

In 1999, Sanjiv Nanda, grandson of Navy chief Admiral Nanda, had allegedly mowed down seven people with his car. The witnesses in this case were allegedly being won over by the defence and allegations of scuttling the case by the prosecution were also being levied.
