Social audit needed to plug leakage of fund

Shillong, Jun 30 (UNI) Meghalaya Governor Banwari Lal Joshi today mooted the idea of initiating social audit to plug the leakage of fund, meant for development in the North Eastern states.

'' People have to become partners in project monitoring and implementation to ensure that the ultimate end-use of fund get motivated for the creation of permanent assets in the region, '' Mr Joshi said at seminar on ''Capability of VSE sector as engine growth and regional development''.

The Governor also said the development of the North East could be achieved if there was strong will for proper development, monitoring, implementation of employment guarantee scheme, enhancement of administrative transparency and accountability.

Mr Joshi harped on an urgent need to improve connectivity by developing road, rail and river transport in the region.

'' The per capita income of the North Eastern states is slightly above the national average and the same has now fallen to 40 per cent below the national average due to poor connectivity among other regions, '' he observed.
