Land develops 200 metre long cracks in Kaushambi
Kaushambi, June 30 (UNI) In a strange incident, land at several spots in Sirathu area here has developed 200 metre long cracks with a thundering sound.
The half feet broad and 18-metre deep cracks were reported in Saurai Khurd, Roop Narayanpur Gorion, Bhumrauli and Jhandapur village.
According to villagers, ''the incident was an outcome of God's anger, which would result in natural disasters in the village.'' On the other hand, the district administration said the cracks resulted, following welting heat, delay in monsoons and sharp decline in underground water level.
A team of geologists surveyed the Sirathu area today and measured the cracks to be 18 metre deep.
Joint Director, Geological Department, Dr Dhaneshwar Rai said the land cracked, owing to excessive exploitation of the underground water. The situation is tense as there is a wide gap between the availability and consumption of the underground water.
