Nogles, Arizona, June 29 (Reuters) US authorities said today they have discovered a major smuggling tunnel linking Nogales, Arizona, with its Mexican sister city, Nogales, Sonora.

Investigators from the United States and Mexico targeted a home and apartment that concealed two entrances to a sophisticated passageway, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement.

It was unclear if the tunnel was used for smuggling drugs or people across the U.S.-Mexican border.

Officials from the Drug Enforcement Agency and the immigration agency said they would provide more details later today.

More than 40 tunnels connecting towns in Mexico and the United States have been discovered by police since the September 11, 2001, attacks.
