Sowing of Kharif crops is on with monsoon advancement

New Delhi, June 29 (UNI) With further advancement of Southwest monsoon, sowing of Kharif crops has picked in different states of the country.

Transplanting of rice is in progress in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, J&K, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttarkhand and West Bengal.

The total coverage of rice has been 31.64 lakh hectare, the weekly Crop Weather Watch Group (CWWG), under the Ministry of Agriculture, informed here today.

Total coarse cereals cover an area of 20.78 lakh hectare, with jowar in 2.864 lakh hectare, bajra in 6.474 lakh hectare and maize in 8.764 lakh hectare.

Cotton has been sown in 15.29 lakh hectare in Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

Out of this, 8.68 lakh hectare is under BT Cotton.

Sugarcane coverage is reported to be 44.72 lakh hectare and June 7.864 lakh hectare.

As for oilseeds, the total coverage so far has been 13.04 lakh hectare with groundnut in 5.95 lakh hectare, soyabean in 2.91 lakh hectare, sunflower 2.04 lakh hectare, sesamum in 1.49 lakh hectare and castor in 0.63 lakh hectare, the CWWG said.
