More interaction among ISI, state govts and Centre needed

Barrackpore, June 29 (UNI) External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee today emphasised the need for more interaction and integration amongst the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), state governments and the Centre in solving socio-economic problems for the sake of national development.

Addressing a memorial function on the occasion of the National Statistic Day synchronising the 114 birthday of Prof Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, he said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced that henceforth the birthday of Prof Mahalanobis be observed each year as ''National Statistics Day''.

Recalling Prof Mahalanobis' philosophy, he said the ISI council had also deliberated on the formulation of a perspective plan of the Institution for the next ten years and envisaged upgrading of its branches in Chennai and Giridhi.

The function was presided over by Member of the ISI council Prof Debkumar Bose.
