Lucknow, June 29: Uttar Pradesh Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today slammed the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government for introducing 'wasteful schemes'.

Making her budgetary speech in the legislative assembly here, she said schemes including unmenployment allowance and free saree distribution, initiated by the previous regime, served ''no practical purpose.'' ''We would introduce practical schemes which would help the unemployed and economically backward people of the state,'' she said.

She, however, did not take any names. Former Chief Minister and now leader of the Opposition Mulayam Singh Yadav was present in the House.

The CM maintained that urban and rural development and power sector would get a boost in the present regime.

''Criminals who have managed bail using unfair means would not be spared and provisions like Goonda Act and National Security Act (NSA) would be imposed on them.'' Ms Mayawati said, warning people against creating communal disturbances in the state.

Henceforth, 30 per cent of the inspectors/station officers in police stations would belong to either SC, ST or OBC category to instil a sense of confidence in the masses, she announced.

The government was also working on a provision to shift certain jails out of city limits for which, an amount of Rs 26 crore has been earmarked.
