Life imprisonment for jail superintendent, jailor

Bikenar, June 29 (UNI) A fast track court today sent a jail superintendent, jailor and two prisoners to life imprisonment for beating a prisoner to death in the Central Jail here 14 years ago.

The accused include the then Jail Superintendent Om Prakash Chawriya, jailor Rajkumar Jat and prisoners Maji Khan and Ashok alias Golu Arora. Chawriya is at present the jail superintendent in Ganganagar.

The court admitted that these four people beat up and tortured prisoner Lekhvrind Singh at the Central Jail on June 17, 1993 so much that he died afterwards. One other prisoner Lakhi Bawri, who was also involved in the torture, died and as such the court could not take any action against him.

After the sentence, the court sent the four accused to Central Jail. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on the jail superintendent, jailor and Rs 5,000 on prisoners.

The defense counsel, tried to prove that prisoner Lekhvrind Singh died of illness, which, the court refused to admit. Judge Amar Singh , while delivering the judgment, said the jail superintendent, jailor, who are responsible for the security and protection of prisoners, have been found guilty under Section 302 of IPC and awarded them life imprisonment.

The court also added that if the penalty imposed is not paid, the life-imprisonment would be extended for another six months.
