Monsoon hits Delhi day ahead with moderate showers

New Delhi, Jun 28 (UNI) The South West Monsoon hit Delhi today, a day ahead of its scheduled date of arrival as light to moderate showers lashed the Capital city this morning.

With the showers hitting Delhi at around 1030 hours, after a dry spell of over a week, the India Meteorological Department announced the arrival Monsoon a day ahead of its scheduled arrival date of June 29.

''The South West Monsoon has arrived in Delhi,''the Met office said.

Earlier this week, the Met department had forecast that the Monsoon would arrive in the capital by this weekend.

This morning's rains, which followed a heavily overcast sky since early this morning, brought some coolness in the weather of the capital bringing down minimum temperature by several degrees, from 28.7 Degree Celsius this morning.

Though only about 1 mm of rains were recorded till 1130 hours, more showers are expected in the day with the weather office forecasting a cloudy sky in the city during the next 24 hours with possibility of rains and thundershowers.

After spells of pre-Monsoon rains in the third week of June, clouds and rain have been playing hide and seek with the city.

Also, the last week has seen Delhi witness hot and humid conditions which have left the people sweltering.

The arrival of Monsoon in Delhi comes following the build up of a low pressure system in the Northwest Bay of Bengal a few days ago.
