Meghalaya CM briefs PM on Uranium mining in Meghalaya
Shillong, June 28 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang has briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the sentiments of the people in the state about the proposed Uranium mining in the state.
''I have briefed the Prime Minister on the sentiments of the people to mine Uranium in West Khasi Hills district,'' Mr Lapang told reporters here today.
The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) had proposed to develop an open cast mining at Kylleng-Pyndengsohiong Uranium ore and processing project at the Mawthabah.
The Chief Minister apprised Dr Singh of the outcome of the June 12 public hearing on the proposed Uranium mining held at Nongbah Jynrin. ''I told him the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board would submit its detail report on the public hearing,'' he said.
He also assured the Prime Minister of the state government's constituting an all-party committee to study the pros and cons of Uranium mining in the state.
The Committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Mukul M Sangma, will draw two members each from different political parties in the state.
