Two debt-ridden farmers commits suicide in Karnataka
Bangalore, June 27 (UNI) Unable to repay their mounting debts, two farmers committed suicide in Karnataka today.
In Hubli district, 46-year-old Shankreppa Hanni committed suicide as he was unable to repay loans raised from cooperative societies and banks at Sherewad village, near Hubli city.
According to police, he consumed poison in his field on Saturday last and his partially decomposed body was found last night.
In Gulbarga district, yet another sugarcane farmer committed suicide by hanging at Koonralli village in Jawargi taluq last night.
Official sources said Hanumanthappa (35) had cultivated sugarcane in his four acre plot by borrowing money from a grameena bank and private money lenders. He could not sell his produce due to the glut that has affected thousands of farmers in North Karnataka region.
