Two debt-ridden farmers commit suicide in Karnataka

Bangalore, June 27 (UNI) Unable to repay their mounting debts, two farmers allegedly committed suicide in Karnataka.

In Hubli district, 46-year-old Shankreppa Hanni allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison as he was unable to repay loans raised from cooperative societies and banks at Sherewad village, near Hubli city.

According to police, Hanni's partially decomposed body was found from his field last night.

In Gulbarga district, yet another sugarcane farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Koonralli village last night.

Police said Hanumanthappa (35) had cultivated sugarcane in his four-acre plot by borrowing money from a grameena bank and money lenders.

He could not sell his produce due to the glut in the market that affected thousands of farmers in the North Karnataka region.
