Chennai, June 27: ''Project Selvi,'' a unique programme aimed at empowering girl children, would be launched by the Rotary International (RI) District 3230 during the current year.

The main objective of the project is to ensure that ten years from now there should be no girl child without formal education.

Talking to UNI after the installation of the new office-bearers of the Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk here last night, RI District 3230 Governor-elect A S Venkatesh said girls, who have dropped out from schools and girl children who were yet to have access to formal education would be identified and provided them education.

About one lakh girl children, including school dropouts, would be covered under the programme, he said.

''The RI will work in close coordination with the government to identifying the girl children and provide them the necessary education,'' he added.

''We will provide education, including uniforms and text books free of cost, till Plus Two level and offer soft skill training.

Once they had their formal education it's up to them to seek jobs, and the RI will also chip in finding placements for them depending upon their skills,'' he said.

''We will also hold consultations with the school authorities to ensure that the girl students are re-admitted into the same school from where they dropped out due to lack of finance,'' Mr Venkatesh said and added that the RI would counsel the parents of girl children on the need of sending their wards to school.

''Providing education to a boy is akin to providing education to himself. But educating a girl is akin to educating a family.

This will be the theme of the RI 3230 for this project,'' he added.

The RI would also provide vocational training for school dropouts from next month.

Outlining the vision of the RI 3230, which had stepped into its tenth year, he said the RI would launch a project with a seed capital of nearly Rs ten lakh to provide micro credit for the needy. ''Deserving people will be provided loans at low interest rates to start their own ventures and become self-reliant.' The new office-bearers installed at the function, included N K Varadarajan (President), Joseph Mathew (President-elect), Rahul Kesu (Secretary), Rahim (Treasurer).
