Srinagar, June 27 (UNI) Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today demanded a high-level impartial probe into the recent incidents of alleged security forces high-handedness in Bandipora district, and also sought punishment to the guilty so that public confidence was restored.

Addressing a public meeting at Charar-e-Sharief in Badgam district, the PDP patron reacted sharply to the alleged reports of homicides in fake encounters, disappearance of innocent civilians and attacks on the chastity of women across the state.

While the individual cases of all such acts of grave human rights violations must be probed to bring the culprits to book, this ''ugly phenomenon'' necessitates the urgency of withdrawing the armed forces from the civilian areas and revocation of the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act (AFSPA), which gives immunity to the troops indulging in such crimes, he said.

''It is a pity that even the boys who have shunned the path of violence and want to join their families are allegedly eliminated in fake encounters along the Line of Control only to bolster the infiltration figures for obvious reasons,'' Mr Sayeed added.

The former Chief Minister said such incidents could completely jeopardise the normalisation process in Jammu and Kashmir.

He called for a high-level impartial probe into the recent incidents of alleged security forces high-handedness in Bandipora district with punishment to the guilty so that public confidence was restored.

Urging the Centre and the state government to immediately take remedial measures and prevent recurrence of such anti-people offenses, Mr Sayeed said it has now become clear that certain elements in various establishments have developed a deep-rooted vested interest in Kashmir's violence and were creating impediments in the return of peace to keep the pot boiling.

''The tragedy is that in this game-plan, the common people are made to pay with their lives and honor,'' the PDP leader added.

''It is, however, the people's will that will ultimately prevail forcing the enemies of peace to bow before them,'' he said.
