Jail riots: Mayawati puts jail administration under Home dept

Lucknow, June 27 (UNI) Concerned over the increasing incidents of riots in jails, the Uttar Pradesh government today placed the jail administration under the control of the state Home Department and decided to appiont three DIG level IPS officers at ''selected' prisons.

Making this announcement here, Chief Minister Mayawati said with an objective to strengthen the administration of jails, the Jail department has been placed under the control of the Home Department.

''Three IPS officers of DIG level have been posted at selected jails. If need arises, IG and Additional director General (ADG) officers would also be posted,'' she added.

Blaming the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government for the poor condition of jails, she said the IPS officers would carry out raids in jails and would also manage the administration of prisons if required to destroy the network of by criminals within the prisons.

''For a long time the government had been receiving complaints that jails have become a cosy shelter for criminals. The complaints were corraborated by the recovery of mobile phones, objectionable CDs and other illegal articles,'' she said.

The CM said that raids conducted in jails on her orders created a sense of fear amongst the criminals who even tried to eliminate the jail superintendent of Sultanpur jail.

''Jails are meant for punishment and not to lead a luxurious life,'' she added.

She claimed that in a bid to instill confidence in the common man FIRs would be lodged for petty and big crimes alike.

Now Principal secretary(home) will get the additional charge of Principal secretary (Jail) for better cordination between the prison and the police department.
