India to attend Meet on Afghanistan in Rome

New Delhi, June 27 (UNI) A high level Indian delegation headed by Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal will attend the Conference on Rule of Law in Afghanistan being held in Rome during July 2-3.

Ambassador of India in Rome(Italy), Ambassador of India to Afghanistan, Joint Secretary (Police) in Ministry of Home Affairs and Under Secretary (Afghanistan), Ministry of External Affairs will be the other members of the delegation.

The Conference is being jointly organised by the Italian and the Afghan Governments, in collaboration with the UN.

Home Ministry sources said here today that Conference was aimed at obtaining high level political commitment to reform in the Justice sector in Afghanistan, endorsing a donor action plan, establishing a coordinated plan for justice assistance to Afghanistan's provinces, and establishing coordinated mechanisms between the judiciary and the police.

The Conference will include a plenary session at political level and technical panels at official level on judicial reforms and police training.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) Ban Ki-Moon and NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer will also be participating in the Conference.

"The main political message of the Conference is to reaffirm the commitment by the Government and the International Community to accelerate the reform of justice and the implementation of the rule of law, as a fundamental pillar of the reconstruction of Afghanistan," sources said.
