General Rodrigues releases book on road safety

Chandigarh, June 27 (UNI) As a part of the programme for integrating Road Safety with education curriculum and institutionalising traffic discipline in the City, Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh, Gen (Retd) S F Rodrigues today released a book titled 'Road Safety--our Concern' in a function at CII, here today.

Speaking on the occasion, General Rodrigues complemented the Inspector General of Police and other police officers for undertaking this novel effort. He said "This continuing programme for traffic rules and regulations has been rightly started from 6th class as at this the students enters into a new phase of knowledge acquisition process". He emphasised that this programme should be further promoted to make it a life long phenomenon in view of the manifold increase in vehicular traffic.

General Rodrigues asked the police officers to introduce best practices and standards in promoting road safety measures and to check the loss of lives in road accidents.

Sounding a clear signal to the police officers, General Rodrigues said that the policy of one rule for every body must be strictly adhered to and the traffic offenders must be brought to book irrespective of their social or official status.

Inspector General of Police S K Jain in his welcome address dwelled on various steps for road safety and said that the Chandigarh Traffic Police had evolved three pronged strategy including education, enforcement and engineering for effective traffic management. He said that with the efforts of the Chandigarh Traffic Police, a considerable decrease in road accidents had been witnessed in recent years.
