Cops trained in flood water rescue methods

Mumbai, Jun 26: With the south westerly monsoon in full swing over the metropolis, H2O Water Sports today provided a free awareness training programme and demonstration in flood water environment to around 100 cops from police stations in South Mumbai.

The programme was conducted by experts in swift/flood/rapid water rescue by Commander Arun Patil and Kailash Kumawat of H2O. Cdr Patil was the head of the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS), while Kumawat is the only person in India certified to be a search and rescue operator in swift/flood/rapid water situation.

The senior inspectors (in charge of police stations in South Mumbai) were given an awareness presentation by Crd Patil to deal with the frequent flood situations in the city. This was followed by a demonstration of flood rescue technique by Kumawat for the field staff.

Cdr Patil, speaking on the occasion, said Sr Inspectors are in 'command and control' positions and therefore can direct, rescue and relief resources to those areas which are in need of the same.

''Rescue resources are always scarce and therefore need to be deployed with responsibility and accountability, he added.
