Aizawl, Jun 27: It was the Aesop's fable retold at Kulkulh village under Khawzawl police station on Aizawl-Champhai road, when a boy's lie brought chaos into the whole village and police department here yesterday.

The underage boy reported to the village leaders that he had been robbed by two unidentified men while he was alone in the house yesterday. He said after the ''miscreants'' tied him up and muffled him, they searched for the key to the safe which they found it from under the pillow. ''Then they took all the money from the safe and fled on a bike,'' he reportedly said.

He incidentally described the two ''miscreants' as one being long-haired and the other short-haired.

The villagers had even informed the Khawzawl police station.

Then rumours spread that the Khawzawl police had nabbed the ''thieves'' and that brought Kawlkulh villagers to Khawzawl only to learn that no thief had been arrested, but the police were still on the lookout.

However, suspecting something fishy, a police officer from Khawzawl rushed to Kawlkulh village where he interviewed the boy.

The boy then brome down and confessed that he had lied and that it was him who had stolen the money and hidden it in a box.

The missing money had been recovered from where the boy had said it would be.

For his own safety, the boy had been taken by the Khawzawl police. ''Even though he is a minor, a case can be filed against him since he gave us false information,'' Khawzawl police OC was quoted as saying.

''The boy's lie had almost brought us into bigger trouble as we would have mistakenly arrested a long-haired man who lived in a neighbouring village and owned owns a similar kind of bike. If, for instance, that person happens to pass by the village, he would surely have been in trouble,'' an angry village leader said.
