Bypoll: AIADMK functionaries injured in clash
Madurai, June 26 (UNI) Two AIADMK functionaries were injured in a clash, involving the DMK and the AIADMK, near a polling centre in the Madurai West Assembly constituency, today.
According to police, AIADMK district (Rural) secretary M Jayaraman sustained head injuries while another party functionary, Ethirajulu had his leg fractured in the incident.
The violent clash erupted when both the parties were asked to remove the assistance booths, they put up close to the polling centre for Ward number 25 of the City Corporation, falling within the constituency.
The AIADMK workers had reportedly expressed their readiness to vacate the place but on the condition that the rival party would move first. Following this, a wordy duel ensued, leading to a clash, in which the DMK volunteers were led by a local functionary.
Police intervened and diffused the situation.
The AIADMK, was yet to lodge a complaint, police added.
Meanwhile, AIADMK candidate Sellur K Raju has complained to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Naresh Gupta that the DMK workers were attempting to cast bogus votes at a polling booth in the Shenoy Nagar area.
The equipment of a cameraman of a private satellite channel, with leanings towards the opposition AIADMK, was forcibly taken away from him by a group of DMK volunteers near the same venue.
The CEO, accompanied by Returning Officer Dinesh Oliver Ponraj, visited the spot.
