Mangalore: Body of missing sailor found
Mangalore, June 25: The body of a missing sailor of the ill-fated South African cargo ship that ran aground and capsized near Tannirbavi coast near here on Saturday, was found on the Bengre Beach, near New Mangalore Port today.
Officials said fishermen found the body of Tadesse Berikut, an engine room worker belonging to Eritria in the African Continent. He had probably drowned in the turbulent sea while trying to reach the shore after the ship had ran aground.
The Eritria registered ship was carrying 8000 tonnes of furnace slag to UAE. The ship had left New Mangalore Port on Friday but was anchored due to some engine problem. The vessel capsized as it fell on its side on Saturday due to gusty winds the high tidal waves accompanied by heavy rain.
Of the 24 crew members, 21 swam ashore while two drowned on Saturday.
