Two killed in building collapse in Mumbai due to heavy rains

Mumbai, June 24 (UNI) Two people, including a woman, were killed and two others injured when a dilapidated three-storeyed building collapsed at grant road late last night due to heavy rains in the megapolis since last evening.

The deceased were identified as Mohammed Aslam Khan (43) and Ms Meher (19), official sources said.

Six people were trapped under the debris of the Ali Ahmedi Mansion, of which two were rescued immediately.

Injured Ali and Omkar Verma were admitted to the hospital.

Heavy rains have caused havoc in the city affecting train services -- both suburban and inter-state -- severly. All local trains were running 20 to 30 minutes behind schedule.

Most of the low-lying areas, including Hind Mata, Milan Sub-way, Chembur, Matunga, Parel, Kurla and Ghatkopar were inundated.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner (BMC) Jairaj Phatak told UNI over the phone that some parts of the city are below sea level due to which it was difficult to connect storm water system to sea.

The corporation has already sent pumps to clear waterlogging from such areas, he said adding many areas from where water was cleared last evening were again inundated due to heavy downpour since this morning.
