Judgment day in Iraq Anfal trial; hearing starts
Baghdad, June 24: An Iraqi court convened today to hand down judgment against six former high-ranking officials of Saddam Hussein's regime accused of leading a genocidal military campaign against ethnic Kurds in the 1980s.
The most prominent of the six accused is Saddam's cousin, Ali Hassan al-Majeed, widely known as ''Chemical Ali'', who was the architect of the campaign that prosecutors say killed up to 180,000 people and used poison gas to clear villages.
