Gujjar Mahapanchayat begins in Pushkar

Pushkar, June 24: Thousands of Gujjars today gathered amid tight security for the Mahapanchayat here at the Pilgrim City of Pushkar to chalk out future course of action for the community's inclusion in the ST category.

The Mahapanchayat is being called at the behest of the newly formed Akhil Bharatiya Gujjar Sangharsh Samiti.

Gujjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti convenor Col Kirori Singh Bainsla, Delhi MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and a large number of Gujjar leaders and people from the neighbouring states of Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh have reached here to attend the Mahapanchayat.

Col Kirori Singh Bainsla, who was strongly criticised by other Gujjar leaders for calling off the reservation agitation after state government agreed to constitute a three-member committee to look in to their demand, was greeted with a standing ovation on reaching the venue.

The state government has deplyed 30 companies of the RAC to assist the police in maintaining the law and order situation even as the Gujjar leaders have promised that the Mahapanchayat will be held peacefully.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Roadways has suspended its operation to Pushkar in view of the Mahapanchayat.
