TN DIG stresses on proper coordination between banks, police

Chennai, Jun 23 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Director General of Police D Mukherjee today underlined the need for proper coordination between the banking sector and police for effective control of the economic offences, especially in bank related crimes.

Speaking at a workshop on 'Cyber Crime and Economic Offences' jointly organised by ICICI Bank and Tamil Nadu police here, Mr Mukherjee said, ''With internet subscribers on the rise, technology offers white collar criminals easy opportunities to dupe the public.

Hence, there was a need to bring in technologically sound strategies to prevent such offences.'' He also pointed out when a crime was committed, a police officer was required to venture into an area where he has no knowledge and expertise. Hence, he needs to find out a knowledgeable officer from a bank to know the nuances of banking, as he was rather considered as a better source for police, he added.

He said cyber crimes such as identity theft, illegal access to e-mail and credit card frauds were occurring simultanelusly with money laundering and terrorist activities. Large amount of money was now stored in digital form and was transferred through electronic and online gateways to multiple accounts.

Charu Datta Deshpande, Bank's General Manager stressed on closer interaction of financial institutions with law enforcement agencies for effective policing of white collar crimes. He also elaborated on how such crimes were becoming increasingly frequent and have the potential of making the economy suffer.

City Police Commissioner, Letika Saran, Narinderpal Singh, Additional Director General Of Police Crime, Tamil Nadu, were among others, who spoke on the occasion.
