Guard kills one, wounds 5 at Yemen oil plant

SANAA, June 23 (Reuters) A Yemeni security guard at a US-run oil installation in Yemen opened fire on colleagues today, killing an Indian engineer and wounding five others, a security source said.

Two British workers, one American and two Yemeni pilots were hurt when Jamil Mohammed al-Raai began firing indiscriminately at the installation run by US oil and gas firm Occidental Petroleum Corp in Shabwa, the source said.

Raai was seized by Yemeni security forces. Preliminary investigations showed he was suffering from psychological problems, the source added.

Yemen, an independent oil producer, pumps around 450,000 barrels per day. The Arab country, one of the poorest outside Africa, signed a production-sharing agreement with Occidental in March for a block in Shabwa province.

Yemen, which joined the US-led war on terrorism after the September 11, 2001, attacks, has suffered several militant attacks on its oil installations.
