Six railway personnel sentenced to two years RI

Islampur, West Bengal, Jun 22 (UNI) A local court today sentenced six railway personnel to two years rigorous imprisonment for negligence of duty that led to one of the worst train disasters in August 1999 at Gaisal in North Dinajpur district.

First class judicial magistrate Ajoyendra Nath Bhattacharya pronounced the judgement.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 11500 each on S P Chandra (assistant station master), Ram Narayan Singh (assistant station naster), Md Alamuddin (cabin man), Ghulab Chandra Gupta (cabin man), Baidyanath Choudhury (guard) and Jagdish Ram (pointsman).

Asom-bound Abodh Asom Express collided with the Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail at Gaisal, located between Islampur and Kishanganj, on August 2, 1999, in which about 400 passengers died.

Five of the deceased were from West Bengal.
