One dead and nine injured in grenade explosion

Shillong, June 22 (UNI) One person was killed and nine others injured in a grenade explosion in western region of Meghalaya today, police said.

The incident occurred at 1945 hours, when unidentified persons lobbed a grenade at a super market in Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills district.

The was identified as Swapan Baroi, a vegetable vendor.

One person died and nine others were critically injured in the explosion, Inspector General of Police S.B.Singh told UNI here, saying investigations were on.

No militant organisation has claimed responsibility for the explosion.

West Garo Hills District Deputy Commissioner P Sampath Kumar said, the critically injured had been shifted to Guwahati for immediate medical treatment.

Police had cordoned off the whole area and a manhunt was on to nab the perpetrators, he said.

At least, three militant outfits exists in the three districts of Garo Hills after the outlawed A'chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) entered into a tripartite cease-fire agreement with the Union and Meghalaya Governments on July 23, 2004.
