Islamabad, June 21: A man threw a grenade into a Muslim religious gathering in the northwestern Pakistani town of Bannu today, killing one person and wounding 12, police said.

The motive for the attack on the gathering organised by the Tableegi Jamaat group in the town in North West Frontier Province was not immediately clear.

The man threw the grenade after he was challenged at the entrance of the building where the meeting was being held, said town police officer Dar Ali Khan. The attacker was wounded in the blast, he said.

Militants opposed to President Pervez Musharraf's support for the US-led campaign in Afghanistan have carried out attacks in Bannu and elsewhere in Pakistan, but the conservative Tableegi Jamaat preaching group has not been a target for militants.
