Islamabad, June 22 (UNI) Secretary General of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, narrowly escaped ouster from the party position due to timely intervention of party chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.

''Mushahid invited the wrath of the most powerful man (President Pervez Musharraf) by proposing all parties conference (APC) as a solution to the present political crisis,'' The Nation reported.

During his speech in the Senate last Wednesday, the journalist-turned-politician, Mushahid urged the President to call APC for settling the political issues presently faced by the country.

If we could talk to India, why can't we talk to the opposition parties of our own country, he asserted.

He also demanded immediate release of the political prisoners without realising the fact that the ground realities have radically changed since the times when his demand to release Asif Zardari (spouse of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto) was heeded by the present regime.

Remove him (Mushahid) and appoint Sh Rashid Ahmed as party's Secretary General, was the order of the day.

Mushahid, unaware of the move, was attending a reception at the residence of US Deputy Head of Mission hosted in honour of visiting US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher on Wednesday night.

He was receiving laurels from his colleagues and journalists present there for making such a 'bold' demand.

However, he was confident that President Musharraf, being a large hearted man, would give political space to the opposition and resolve all the issues through dialogue.

At the same time, Shujat Hussain and Chief Minister Punjab Ch Pervez Elahi were busy sorting out the issue at the President's Camp Office Rawalpindi.

The sources said that they brought with them the text of Mushahid's speech and showed it to President Musharraf. They argued that there was nothing wrong in it and he uttered every word in good faith.

They also pleaded that a change at this juncture would further complicate the situation.

On the request of both the PML leaders, the President agreed to reverse his decision.
