Lucknow, June 22: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today announced that people would be able to lodge First Information Reports (FIR) in their respective districts for any harassment and atrocity they suffered under the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav government.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government has given one month's time to the people to lodge the FIRs which were not registered during the last three years of the the Samajwadi Party (SP) government's regime. The State Home department has already sent a GO to all distict police chiefs in this regard.

Addressing a press conference, Ms Mayawati said it was her promise to take care of peoples' grievances and this step would ensure justice to the innocent people harrassed in the past regime.

''Lodging of cases on a large scale might give a wrong impression of a rise in crime but the BSP government will strive to ensure the rule of law in the state,'' she maintained.

Taking strong exception of the previous government's slogan of ''Uttar Pradesh me hai dum, Jurm yahan hai kam,'' the Cheif Minister remarked that when cases were not lodged, automatically the crime rate came down.

''My government's main effort will be on ensuring justice for all and creating a conducive atmosphere for the common masses,'' she said, adding that the peoples' mandate for the BSP was basically for the worst crime situation during the SP rule.

''The police department has been asked to play a counseller's role by advising youngsters involved in petty crimes to mend their ways in order to bring them to the mainstream. The police will also solve petty disputes at the village level while efforts will be made to hand over lands seized by criminals in the last three years,'' she added.

The GO has directed the opening of special counters in all SSP/SP offices to lodge FIRs while cases will be monitored by the Zonal IG and the Police headquarters on a regular basis.

Ms Mayawati said the decision had nothing to do with politics and action would only be taken after proper investigation of cases.

She added that the government was taking due legal opinion on cases expunged by the previous regime against politicians with criminal backgrounds and mafia links.
