Hubli to get hi-tech library soon: Minister

Hubli, June 22 (UNI) A hi-tech digital library would soon be set up in Hubli, Primary, Higher Primary and Libraries Minister Basavaraj Horatti said here today.

Addressing a press conference, he said a building belonging to City Municipal Corporation had been purchased at a cost of Rs.4.5 crore for the purpose. It was being renovated at a cost of Rs.1.2 crore of which Rs.50 lakh had already been released.

He said it was proposed to keep different books worth over Rs.One crore in this library and to build an Auditorium, which could accommodate 350 people. An experts committee headed by BVB College of engineering and technology Principal Ashok Shettar has been formed to implement the works.

Mr Horatti said a state level committee was being formed to report on the libraries to be established at Gram panchayat level in the state. The government had increased monthly grant of gram panchayats to Rs.400 to purchase newspapers.

Replying to a question, the minister said it has been decided to observe 'Librarians Day' on August 12 to commemorate the birth day of Father of Libraries in Karnataka, Dr S R Ranganath. The government would be spending Rs.5.06 crore to bring library department under e-administration, he added.
