AIIMS launches IVF facility
New Delhi, June 22 (UNI) In the first such initiative by any government hospital, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has launched the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) facility to cater to poor and the weaker sections of society.
The facility will be headed by Head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics department Suneeta Mittal, an AIIMS spokesperson said.
''This is the first such facility in a Government hospital.
It was a long-standing demand in AIIMS,'' he added .
The poor, weaker sections of society and government employees can use the facility at nominal charges for only drugs and disposables at the facility.
Prof Mittal, who will be assisted by two senior doctors at the facility, expressed the hope that the facility would achieve good results.
IVF is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of assisted reproductive technology have failed.
The process involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process, removing ova (eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium. The fertilised egg (zygote) is then implanted back in the woman's uterus imitats successful pregnancy.
