Prathibha, wrong choice: JD(U)

Bangalore, June 21 (UNI) The Janata Dal (United) today welcomed electing a woman as the President of the country, but said UPA nominee Pratibha Patil was a ''wrong choice''.

Talking to reporters here, JD(U) Vice-President Mohammed Nazeer Ahmed alleged that Ms Patil had lowered the dignity of the highest office by her ''unwarranted and uncalled for outbursts'' that hurt the sentiments of not only Muslims, but also her own Rajput community.

Incumbent President A P J Abdul Kalam deserved another term as he lived as a statesman to protect and promote the interests of the country. Mr Kalam had universal appeal and commanded respect of all sections of society, he said.

''It is high time the Congress refrained from imposing on the nation another 'rubber stamp' President, but respect the sentiments of the majority of people by endorsing Mr Kalam's candidature,'' he added.
