Modi stresses need for water management

Ahmedabad, June 21 (UNI) Chief Minister Narendra Modi today stressed the need for water management for Gujarat's sustainable development.

Speaking at a seminar on ''Water Management -- Issues and Perspective'', organised by the Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Mr Modi cited the example of Israel and urged the need to learn from that country's experience.

Deputy Water Commissioner and Head of Israel's Desalination Board Dr Yosef Dreizin, who was present on the occasion, said Israel's success was mainly due to a very strong water philosophy and policy.

Water in Israel is owned by the people and managed by the government, he said. There is a very strict water law that governs the consumption by people, industry and farmers, and has thus generated an appropriate level of awareness about water being an essential commodity, he said.
