Srinagar, Jun 21 (UNI) The Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) today supported a strike call given by the Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen militant outfit for tomorrow in protest against confering of British knighthood to India-born author Salman Rushdie by Britain.

Addressing a news conference here, LJP national vice president Sanjay Saraf condemned the conferring of the title on Rushdie, saying Britain's act was directed against Islam.

''The knighthood title was given to Rushdie only to hurt and insult the sentiments of the Muslims across the world,'' he added.

Mr Saraf supported the shutdown call tomorrow in protest against the award and urged the people to make the strike a huge success.

Rushdie was awarded the knighthood for services to literature in Queen Elizabeth's birthday honours list published on Saturday.
