CCEA approves scholarship scheme for minority students
New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today gave its approval for the Merit-Cum-Means based scholarship to a targeted 20,000 students per year belonging to minority communities.
The centrally sponsored scheme is to be launched during the financial year 2007-08 and will be implemented by the State governments and union territories.
"Students from the minority communities fulfilling the merit-cum-means criteria and pursuing professional and technical courses at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels and Institutes recognised by the appropriate authorities will be eligible for this scholarship" Finance Minister P Chidambaram told a news conference after the CCEA meeting.
The minorities which are covered under the scheme include Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis.
