BJP-ASDC demand Governor rule in NC Hills

Guwahati, Jun 21 (UNI) Coming down heavily on the Congress-led state government for failing to control the law and order situation in the NC Hills district of Asom, the BJP-Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) today demanded Governor's rule in the trouble-torn district.

The six months' extension of the autonomous district council's term expired yesterday, creating a 'vacuum position'. According to the rules, the governor should take over the district council now, but till date no such notification has been issued, BJP leader Kulendra Daula Gupu told reporters here.

He alleged the state government has allowed a 'constitutional crisis' to take place in the hill district.

''Instead of governor's rule, it appears that the state government was contemplating to further extend the term of the district council,'' he said.

The BJP-ASDC demanded that the government should deploy more security forces in the sensitive areas, and when the situation improved, the dates of the district council elections be declared, the BJP said.

ASDC leader Prakanta Warisa said the High Court was also against another extension.

A delegation of the BJP-ASDC alliance met the chief minister and governor yesterday, pressing for their demands.

The chief minister hinted that the government would go by the decision of the High Court regarding the elections of the NC Hills autonomous district council, Mr Warisa said.

The BJP-ASDC alliance alleged total failure of the state government in containing the law and order situation in the hill district, and that the government was playing with the life and property of the people.

The poll-bound district has witnessed a spurt of violence, with militants killing as many as three top political leaders in the first week of June.

The polls were due on June 12, but the violence forced the government to indefinitely postpone the elections.
