AMU seeks Rs 100 cr from UGC for modernisation, heritage conservatio

New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) The Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) has asked for a special grant of Rs 100 crore for restoration of its historical buildings and modernisation.

Vice-Chancellor Prof P K Abdul Azis raised the matter with the Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof Sukhdeo Thorat during a meeting relating to the 11th Plan of the University, a communication from the AMU said here.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development had earlier allotted special grants to three central universities that celebrated their 150 th anniversary.

Since AMU is one of the oldest universities in the country with a long heritage and cherished historical past, the vice-chancellor pointed out that it was entitled to similar special grant from University Grants Commission to undertake a programme for preserving its legacy.

The UGC Chairman has asked Prof Azis to submit a detailed proposal in this regard, the AMU release said.

The Vice-Chancellor said the University would soon come up with a detailed blue print for the restoration of AMU's historic buildings and modernization of the infrastructure in the campus.

He also laid stress on the need to upgrade the ICT facilities including 24 hours connectivity in the University campus.
