New Delhi, June 21 (UNI) Accusing the Asom government of failing to provide adequate relief to flood victims, the All India Minorities Front (AIMF) today urged the Centre to immediately announce assistance for them.

''Large number of people in Asom have been affected by the floods. They are shelterless and have no food and drinking water...,'' AIMF national president S M Asif said.

Mr Asif accused the state government of neglecting Muslims in relief distribution and asked the leaders to rise above party politics to help the victims.

Officials in Asom said over 2,26,127 people in six districts, spanning an area of 21,479 hectares, were affected by the first wave of floods in the state till now. A total of 234 villages have been affected so far.

However, the overall flood situation in the state improved today with no rainfall in the past 24 hours and water levels receding in the Brahmaputra, Barak and their tributaries throughout the state.

But, the Brahmaputra at Dibrugarh, and Namatighat and the Barak and its tributaries -- Katakhal at Matizuri point, Hailakandi and Kushiara at Karimganj -- are still flowing above the danger level with a falling trend.
