Roy deposes in Ramesh Rahane case

Mumbai, June 20 (UNI) Police Housing and Welfare Corporation (PHWC) Managing Director and former Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy today deposed before the MCOCA court here in an extortion case involving Ramesh Rahane and eight others.

The accused allegedly owe allegiance to Anees Ibrahim Kaskar gang. On behalf of Anees Ibrahim, the accused had allegedly demanded a sum of Rs 25 lakh from film director Ali Moorani.

Mr Roy deposed before Maharashtra Control for Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court judge M R Puranik.

Mr Roy testified that he, as the police commissioner then, had granted sanction to invoke MCOCA against Rahane and the eight others for trying to extort Rs 25 lakh from Moorani. He identified the sanction letter, bearing his signature, in the court.

Investigating officer V P Kadam said in 2004, Anees Ibrahim and Salim Chikun had called up Moorani and demanded Rs 25 lakh.

Thereafter, Anees called up Rahane and directed the latter to collect the amount. However, Moorani refused to pay following which Rahane and his aides hatched a conspiracy to murder him.

Rahane and the eight others were arrested on the basis of a telephonic conversation and a complaint lodged by Moorani.
