New Delhi, June 20: Left parties today asserted that the newly -christened United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA)'s appeal to President APJ Abdul Kalam to contest for the second term was a "futile exercise" as no move could change the ground situation.

Top leaders of the CPI, CPI(M) and Forward Bloc also refuted UNPA leader Chandrababu Naidu's assertion that the new grouping was not playing politics but acting in the larger national interest.

Third Front leaders after an hour-long meeting with Dr Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhawan said the President was willing for a "second term," provided there was a certainty of being elected unanimously.

They also appealed to both the UPA and the NDA and all other parties to support Dr Kalam's candidature for a second term.

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told sources that the UPA had fielded Ms Pratibha Patil as the Presidential candidate, which has been supported by the Left and BSP among other parties.

" After the official announcement, no manoeuver can alter the situation," Mr Bardhan, the veteran Communist and freedom fighter, said.

The CPI veteran made it clear that ''those who are staring defeat in their face were trying all these types of methods but would not gain anything in the process.'' Mr Bardhan said the victory of Ms Patil was assured as more than half of the votes required for the victory are already with her.

In an electoral college of 10,98,882 votes, the candidate backed by UPA could easily get over 5.70 lakh votes, counting on BSP's share of 58,300 votes.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat said for the Left, the chapter was already closed especially when Ms Patil had unanimously been fielded to contest for the President's post.

The CPI(M) leader said she was simply at a loss to understand the motive behind the" so-called Third Front leaders to approach Dr Kalam." Forward Bloc General Secretary Debvrat Biswas said the Left had already made it clear that it did not favour a second term for Dr Kalam.

" The so-called Third Front leaders are simply playing a joke on the nation when they approach the President knowing fully well the ground reality," Mr Biswas said.

On the TDP leader's assertion that the new grouping is not playing politics, the Forward Bloc leader countered," Then what are they doing?"
