Lecturer commits suicide after dowry harassment

New Delhi, Jun 20 (UNI) A 25-year-old lecturer of a Nursing college committed suicide by injecting herself with poison in Shakarpur area of East Delhi, allegedly due to dowry harassment.

Asha Maheshwari, lecturer at Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing in Lajpat Nagar, was found dead at her Shakarpur residence yesterday by her brother-in-law Gaurav, according to the police.

She was rushed to the hospital, after she was found lying unconscious in her one-room accommodation, where she was declared 'brought dead'. She had reportedly injected a poisonous substance.

Gaurav, a pharmacist apprentice in a hospital, said when there was no response despite him knocking the door several times after return from office yesterday at about 1930 hrs, he called his neighbours and broke open the door and found her unconscious.

In her suicide note Asha wrote that no one should be held responsible for her step.

Her parents allege that she would be regularly harassed for dowry and named four people, including her husband Saurabh, brother-in-law Gaurav and father-in-law Pramod Maheshwari in their complaint.

Her husband Saurabh was away at his parents' place in Hathras (Uttar Pradesh) since Sunday.

Married recently in February this year, Saurabh who was then working in a private firm later left the job and was presently unemployed.

An SDM enquiry has been ordered and a case registered at Shakarpur police station. However, no arrests have been made so far.
