Chennai, June 20 (UNI) A new centre of excellence for design and manufacturing -- The Indian Institute for Information Technology -- Design and Manufacturing (IIITD&M) -- is coming up near Kancheepuram, near here, during the current academic year.

The centre is being set up the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on an 100-acre site.

IIT Madras Mechanical Department Head R Gnanamoorthy who was also the Pro-in-charge of the programme in a release here today said its vision was to become a premier institution of excellence in design and manufacturing creating and developing a new generation of engineers and technologists with the ability and mindset to lead the industries in globally competitive economic environment.

The Tamil Nadu Government had earmarked 100 acre of land in Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road for setting up the institute which would serve as an inter-disciplinary institution for education and research in the area of product design and development using the state-of-the art concepts, tools, processes and practices of the industry world over.

The IIITD&M offered four-year Bachelor of Technology Programme with specialisation in design and manufacturing in academic year 2007-08 and other programmes in the following years.

Admission to the undergraduate programme - B Tech (Design and Manufacturing)- for July 2007 session was made through the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by Central Board of Secondary Examination.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) has been entrusted with the responsibility of setting up this institute by the Centre, he added.

Classes would be conducted at the IITM Campus with support of IITM staff and faculty till the institute's facilities were in place, he added.
