Global workshop on surface tech gets of Jun 29

Chennai, June 20 (UNI) A three-day International Workshop and Exhibition on Advances in Surface Technology 2007 (SURFTEC7) will be held here from June 29.

The event was being jointly organised by the Indian Welding Society, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT, Madras and the Welding Reserach Institute, BHEL Tiruchirapalli.

Conference Chairman D R G Achar and Secretary M Kamaraj told newsmen here today the proposed mega event would bring together about 100 companies and 800 delegates from India and abroad.

The international event and technical exhibition will showcase the latest products, technology and techniques from across the globe in the surface technology arena.

The main objective of the event was to address various issues falling under the purview of surface engineering, including insight into the various surface degradation proceses, concepts of surface engineering and methods to enhance component performance, coating materials, cladding and repair welding techniques, microstructure, case studies from various industries and more.

Speakers from reputed organisations such as ARCI, Hyderabad, RWTH Aachen Germany, EO paton electric welding institute, Navy, IGCAR Kalpakkam, DMRL Hyderabad and CECRI Karaikudi would address the conference.

To a question, they said surface engineering was a growing science whose applications in various industries were increasing rapidly.

Most engineering components had limited lifetime because of the damage caused to them by environmenal degradation.

Corrosion,erosion, wear and tear and a combination of these cost thousands of crore every year through repair replacement and non-availability of the components when they were needed.

The solution was to design and manufacture components with enhanced performance,they added.

Exhibition Convenor C Balasubramanian said the exhibition would have stalls from many MNCs like Hauzer Techno Coating of The Netherlands, Daido Steel of Japan, DELORA, USA, ESAB and most of the leading Indian companies.
